St Martin's Theatre sits in West Street, a stone’s throw from Charing Cross Road in vibrant Camden. Originally intended as one of a matching pair, with the Ambassadors Theatre its twin, it was designed by the prolific W.G.R. Sprague in memory of the 9th Baron Willoughby de Broke. The venue’s long-awaited opening was delayed by the outbreak of the First World War and its first production, Houpla, didn’t take the stage until late 1916. In 1923 Basil Rathbone, probably most famous for his big screen roles as Sherlock Holmes, played there as Harry Domain in R.U.R. Bertie Meyer ran the venue between its opening and 1967, making the venue a real family affair for most of its illustrious life. It is probably most famous for Agatha Christie’s Mousetrap, which transferred to St Martin’s in early 1974 and has remained there ever since, smashing every world record for longevity.
